GLENDALE, Ariz. – A 2-0 shutout victory on Monday night over Mesa Community College combined with a result elsewhere in the ACCAC put the Glendale Community College women's soccer team into the Region I Division II semifinals.
Coming into the night level on points and with two draws in two prior matchups with Chandler-Gilbert Community College, things appeared to be headed toward a one-match playoff between the two teams to determine who would be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming postseason tournament. However, while Glendale did its part with the victory on Monday, the Coyotes were held to a shock 2-2 tie with Paradise Valley Community College, giving the bid to the Gauchos.
Glendale did its work early on, scoring both goals in the opening half-hour of the match. After dominating possession and chances in the early minutes, the payoff came from a Mia Robles goal in the 17th minute, sliding in to poke a shot home after a pass forward from Damaris Samora. In the 30th minute, Kylie Hutson intercepted a Mesa pass in the attacking third, turned, and fired home from distance to make it 2-0.
There were plenty more chances, but no final finishing touch the rest of the way for the Gauchos. The defense presented Mesa with few opportunities, however, allowing only eight total shots in the match and just two that were on target. Mayra Kruk was in position to stop both of those shots and preserve the shutout.
Robles had six shots in the match (four on target), with Jaidyn Rowles adding four of her own (two on goal).
Now 6-6-2 on the season, Glendale will carry the No. 4 seed into an elimination match on Oct. 30 against Pima Community College. First kick is slated for 6 p.m. in Tucson.
