Women’s Soccer Plays Chandler-Gilbert to Two Draws in Two Nights

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Due to an earlier postponement, the Glendale Community College women's soccer team had to play Chandler-Gilbert Community College twice in a span of just over 24 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, earning a 2-2 home tie on Tuesday and a 1-1 road draw on Wednesday. The results between the sides mean that Glendale maintains its three-point lead in the ACCAC standings for the fourth and final postseason berth as the Gauchos move to 5-5-2 on the season.

In Tuesday's match, Glendale got off to a rocky start and allowed a penalty in the third minute that was converted by Rylie Kelly to put the Coyotes in front. Down 1-0 at the break, an energized Gaucho squad knotted the match with a penalty of their own in the 58th minute off the boot of Keira Gonzales, followed by a go-ahead goal from Jaidyn Rowles in the 64th minute. Chandler-Gilbert found the tying goal in the 79th minute on an Allie Roseberry header from a corner kick and the two sides left things with a stalemate.

In Wednesday night's rematch, it was Chandler-Gilbert who once again came out with a head of steam and Alivia Waite put the Coyotes in front in the fourth minute. Once Glendale found its footing, it was largely one-way traffic the rest of the match. Kalei Henderson made terrific saves of a Damaris Samora free kick in the first half to push it off the crossbar and later on Jaidyn Rowles had a shot carom off the post to keep the Gauchos down a goal at the break.

It was more of the same in the second half with Glendale pressing forward for the equalizer. Samora had a header from a corner kick cleared off the line by a Coyote defender and a second Gaucho shot in the second half was also cleared away at the last instant by a defender on the post. The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute after a litany of Glendale chances. With the goalkeeper far out of her box after a Gaucho free kick, Myla Clay had the ball fall to her feet and she did well to redirect it low enough to fly in under the bar to knot the score at 1-1. Goalkeeper Mayra Kruk ended with the assist after delivering the pass that set the sequence in motion.

Glendale finished Wednesday night with a 19-8 edge in total shots, including a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. Samora led all players in the match with nine shot attempts.

The Gauchos play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday with a trip to #6 Phoenix College. First kick is slated for 5:45 p.m.
