Yesenski Busts Loose for Four Goals in Blowout Victory

PHOENIX – The Glendale Community College men's soccer team scored six times in the second half of an 8-0 victory over GateWay Community College on Friday afternoon in a match that ended a couple minutes early due to the mercy rule. The win for the Gauchos lifts them to 5-2-1 on the season.

Hubert Muka helped stake Glendale to the lead in the 10th minute, jumping all over a weak back pass towards the keeper and then drawing a foul from the keeper in the box for a penalty that was converted by Owen Collins. The Gauchos added onto their lead in the 42nd minute with a pass from Jacob Engwall that was run onto by Jordan Yesenski and passed into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 at the break.

Glendale ran away with the match in the second half. Yesenski scored his second goal of the day on a free kick just a couple minutes after the restart to make it 3-0. Quick distribution out of the back from Eli Anderson led to a fourth Gaucho goal in the 55th minute as Glendale hit GateWay on the counterattack and Yesenski made it a hat trick with another Engwall assist leading to a tap-in goal.

Just shy of the hour mark, Yesenski added a fourth as a trailing GateWay defender kept him onside and Nathan Johansen clipped a ball ahead, allowing Yesenski to round the keeper and roll it in for a 5-0 edge. In the 69th minute, heads-up play from Abed Abwe and a sprinting Eugene Tusinge unlocked the GateWay defense again to leave the Gecko goalkeeper in a helpless position.

The match was finished off by a pair of Dezmon Valdivia goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes. Valdivia took the ball 70 yards by himself on the first goal, forcing a turnover and then splitting a pair of GateWay defenders before depositing the ball in the back of the net. He then ended the match early by attempting to chip the keeper before following up on the rebound after the initial save.

Anderson and Gavin Smith split time in goal on the day, with each making a pair of saves to keep GateWay off the board. Glendale had 23 shot attempts in the match, with five coming from Yesenski and three coming from Engwall.

Glendale heads to Paradise Valley Community College on Oct. 7, facing the Pumas at 3:15 p.m.
