GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Glendale Community College men's soccer team capped a busy week with a split of two matches, losing its first game of the season on Tuesday night away to Pima Community College, 2-0, before rebounding on Saturday with a thrilling 4-3 home win over Scottsdale Community College in which all seven goals came inside the final 40 minutes. The results leave the Gauchos at 3-1-1 on the season.
In Tuesday night's match at Pima, Glendale fell behind in the 31st minute but from there managed to remain in striking distance almost until the very end despite sustained attacks from the Azteks. Pima ended with an 11-1 edge in total shots on goal in the match, but thanks to Eli Anderson's nine saves, the Gauchos nearly were able to take something out of the match. It took until the 89th minute for Pima to add the second goal that put the match away.
Saturday night's home match with Scottsdale was shaping up to be an evenly-played defensive battle through the opening 45 minutes with the score still tied at 0-0. That quickly changed in the second half, starting with a Glendale goal from Pablo Morquecho in the 54th minute. The Gauchos added onto their lead in the 58th minute with a curling free kick from Beani Wammunga.
The 2-0 lead was erased by Scottsdale in a flash with a pair of headers in the 64th and and 65th minutes to knot the game at 2-2. On the final kick of the ball before the second-half water break, Daniel Hernandez Vega restored the Glendale lead at the back post on a cross from Morquecho, making it 3-2 in the 69th minute.
More chaos was still in store. A free kick from Scottsdale's Alan Acosta in the 78th minute just snuck in past Anderson and made it 3-3, setting up a tense finish. The deciding goal came from a quick build-up in the Scottsdale 18-yard box, with Hernandez Vega and Jacob Engwall assisting on a low finish through a wall of bodies from Logan Henley in the 85th minute to give the Gauchos the victory.
Glendale is back in action on Tuesday night, going on the road to face Chandler-Gilbert Community College at 8 p.m.
